What is a Lorry Mounted Lift Truck?
A lorry mounted lift truck is a forklift that mounts onto the back of a HGV Truck or Trailer so that wherever the vehicles travels to, the driver will have brought his/her own forklift to assist with loading and unloading of the vehicle. These machines are often called Moffett. This is included in the TUPPCO NPORS Lorry Mounted Lift Truck (MOFFETT) training – N004
What does the TUPPCO NPORS Lorry Mounted Lift Truck training course include?
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
- Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
- Safely mount and dismount the machine
- Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
- Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, over varying terrain, rough ground, inclines, in open and confined areas
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out processing tasks
- Carry out lifting and Load handling tasks
- Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
- Load and unload external transport safely
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Venue and equipment requirements:
- Suitable and safe area to lift and lower loads to 75% of total reach of machine
- 3 x palletised loads (IBC containers or similar)
- Lorry bed or flatbed trailer
- Varying terrain and slopes
- Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
- Suitable welfare facilities
- Lorry mounted lift truck with pallet forks
- Operators’ manual
- Risk assessment completed
- In date thorough test examination for the machine
PPE Requirements:
- Suitable head protection
- Suitable eye protection
- Suitable hearing protection
- Suitable work clothes including wet weather
- Gloves
- Suitable work boots including steel toe protection

Theory assessment:
- 20 multiple choice questions
- 5 written questions
- 4 marks per question
- 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
- Mount the truck at the start position
- Detach truck from vehicle
- Drive forward and pick load A
- Reverse to start position
- Drive forward through chicane and stack at high level B
- De stack load at eye level C
- Stack load at low level D squarely and in line with adjacent loads
- De stack load from high level B
- Reverse with load trailing from main aisle through chicane to start
- Drive forward through chicane and stack load at eye level C
- Pick up load from low level at D and carry in reverse through chicane
- Place the load squarely and within 150mm of the vertical face A
- Withdraw the forks and reverse the truck to the start
- Attach truck to vehicle
- Dismount from truck
- Pass mark is less than 40 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications Time allowed is 2 hours
