What is the role of a slinger/signaller?
A Slinger Signaller acts as the eyes and ears of the person operating the crane who won’t be able to see everything happening around them. An obstructed view for a Crane Operator increases loading and lifting risks, and general site safety can be compromised. This is included in the TUPPCO NPORS Slinger / Signaller training – N402
What does the TUPPCO NPORS Slinger / Signaller training course include?
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a slinger / signaller
- Be able to conform to manufacturers requirements as per technical data, conform to relevant regulations and legislation
- Be able to locate, identify and explain different Types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories. explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
- Be able to Interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
- Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify nonservice able items
- Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
- Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
- Set up exclusion zone explaining actions required for emergency actions, Identifying any overhead hazards
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for slinger / signaller use
- Secure various Types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring Load balance, security and integrity
- Direct and guide the movement of loads to different Types of location using different methods of communication
- Environmental considerations
- Carry out all cut-off service and Securing procedures
Venue and equipment requirements:
- Suitable and safe area to operate machine
- 1 x balanced load
- 1 x unbalanced load
- 1 x consist of tubes no less that 4 metres in length
- Lifting straps and chains
- Lifting machine – telehandler, crane, excavator
- Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
- Suitable welfare facilities
- Operators’ manual for lifting machine
- Risk assessment completed
- In date thorough test examination for machine
PPE Requirements:
- Suitable head protection
- Suitable eye protection
- Suitable hearing protection
- Suitable work clothes including wet weather
- Gloves

Theory assessment:
- 20 multiple choice questions
- 5 written questions
- 4 marks per question
- 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
- Pre use and operational checks
- Signal loads to be lifted and lowered
- Attach loads to lifting accessories
- Use 2 different lifting accessories
- 1 load must be completed out of sight of the operator
- Bundle load must slung using double choke hitch
- Hand signals to confirm to BS7121 part1:2006
- Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
- Time allowed is 1 hour 20 minutes
