What is 4×4 off road vehicle?

These vehicles have additional gear ranges. Although all-wheel-drive vehicles also deliver torque to both axles, ‘four-wheel drive’ generally describes vehicles that have off-roading capabilities. The term ‘4×4’ is used for this category, as well.

What does the training course include?

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacture’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for all-terrain vehicle use
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Prepare the 4×4 vehicle for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

  • Suitable and safe area to operate and manoeuvre machine
  • Varying terrain and slopes
  • Suitable and safe area to complete paperwork
  • Suitable welfare facilities

  • Suitable eye protection
  • Suitable work clothes including wet weather

Practical assessment criteria:

  • Pre use and operational checks
  • Travel up and down slopes
  • Drive through restriction forwards and backwards
  • Reverse 30 metres in a straight line, through restrictions
  • Use 2WD, 4WD, Differential lock,
  • Load vehicle and secure
  • Drive over uneven and sloping terrain
  • Pass mark is less than 30 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
