What is a lorry loader?
A lorry loader is a piece of heavy machinery that uses hydraulic attachments to pick up and deposit material onto a long bed at the rear of the vehicle. The machine is mainly based on an excavator design with a boom to swivel attachment to make the work of selecting materials easy. This is included in the TUPPCO NPORS Lorry loader training – N107
What does the TUPPCO NPORS Lorry loader training course include?
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a plant operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
- Configure the vehicle and loader crane ready for travel
- Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
- Safely mount and dismount the machine
- Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
- Correctly deploy the stabilisers according to manufactures specifications
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out processing tasks
- Carry out processing task
- Load material onto transporting vehicles, containers, or processing plant
- Fit and remove attachments
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Theory assessment:
- 20 multiple choice questions
- 5 written questions
- 4 marks per question
- 80% pass mark required
Practical assessment criteria:
- Pre use and operational checks
- Travel through chicane forwards and backwards
- Travel through restrictions
- Deploy the stabilisers
- Load material into hopper / lorry
- Grab – 4 x full loads of spoil to nearside and offside of the vehicle and 4 x loads of 75% of cranes maximum lift
- Hook – 1 x load of least 75% of cranes maximum lift positioned cab side, 1 x load to 5 metres with an offset centre of gravity, 1 x load of placed on the offside
- Brick clamp – 1 x load of least 75% of cranes maximum lift positioned cab side, 1 x load to 5 metres with an offset centre of gravity, 1 x load of placed on the offside
- Make load secure
- Pass mark is less than 20 penalty points and no mandatory disqualifications
- Time allowed is 1 hour 20 minutes
